Damned if he did, damned if he didn't

Alleged President Bush claims that Harriet Miers was the best person he could find for the job of Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. This gives us only two possibilities:

  1. Bush is lying. There is someone more qualified for the job, somewhere in the United States. Would you like that list sorted alphabetically or geographically?

  2. Bush is telling the truth. He really doesn't believe that experience or track record — the cornerstone of any system of accountability — matters in the least. This theory is backed by our recent experience with people like Michael Brown or Donald Rumsfeld.
Either way, America is screwed. We need to reject Harriet Miers — in the Judiciary Committee, without a filibuster! — for the sake of the nation.
